In April 2010, new rules developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) went
into effect for contractors that disturb painted surfaces in buildings constructed prior to 1978.
These Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) regulations require all contractors to:
- Become an EPA certified firm
- Have certified lead renovators on staff
- Check painted surfaces to determine if they contain lead
- Utilize specific types of engineering controls, containments and work practices
- Perform specific cleaning tasks, verification and test their work area
